🔒 Microsoft Authenticator Is Dropping Password Autofill — Here’s What You Need to Know

Home / Blogs / Microsoft Authenticator Is Dropping Password Autofill — Here’s What You Need to Know

Microsoft is making some big changes to its Authenticator app, and if you’ve been using it to store and autofill passwords, you’ll want to pay attention.

Starting July 2025, Microsoft will begin phasing out the password storage and autofill feature from the Authenticator app, with full removal happening by August 1, 2025.

🚨 What’s Changing?

Microsoft Authenticator, the popular app for multi-factor authentication (MFA), is dropping its password autofill feature to streamline services and shift all credential management to Microsoft Edge.

Here’s the timeline for the change:

  • June 2025 – You can no longer save new passwords in Authenticator.
  • July 2025 – Autofill stops working, and stored payment info will be deleted.
  • August 2025 – All saved and unsaved passwords in Authenticator will be gone.

đź’ˇ Why the Change?

Microsoft is consolidating its password management under one roof—Microsoft Edge—to offer a more unified experience across devices. This means the Edge browser will now be the home for all autofill and password storage services.

If you want to keep using your saved passwords, you’ll need to:

  1. Install Microsoft Edge on your mobile device (iOS or Android).
  2. Open Settings > Autofill/Passwords on your device and select Edge as the default.
  3. Log into Edge with your Microsoft account to begin syncing your data.

Once complete, all your saved passwords will be available via Edge > Settings > Passwords.

🧠 What if You Don’t Want to Use Edge?

No problem—you can export your passwords from Microsoft Authenticator and import them into another password manager before August 1, 2025.

To export:

  • Tap Menu > Settings > Autofill > Export Passwords
  • Choose a secure location and save

⚠️ Note: Only account passwords can be exported. Payment info must be re-entered manually for security reasons, and this must be done before July 2025.

✅ What’s Staying?

While the password manager is going away, Passkeys are staying. If you use passkeys for secure login, the Authenticator app will still support this feature—you just need to keep the app enabled as your Passkey Provider.
